Were you wondering about the "leaf" homework from yesterday? In science we have been learning about life cycles, so we tied that into leaves and their life cycle! We now know fancy pigment words including "chlorophyl," "anthocyanins," and "carotenoids." We learned that leaves are losing their chlorophyl now because there is less sunlight, so we are able to see their true color! We graphed our leaves and made some stained glass leaves at the end of the day.
Happy Respect Week!

We ended Friday with an exciting "seed dissection!" We used toothpicks to discover what the inside of seeds looks like. We noticed that some seeds were older than others, because we could see the beginnings of the leaves and roots. The class was very technical when utilizing their toothpicks and looked like real surgeons with their concentration!

We have now completed our second week of word work! Our spelling words are based on different patterns that we notice in words. Throughout the week in school, we work on a few different ways to sort their words based on those patterns.
We have now completed our second week of word work! Our spelling words are based on different patterns that we notice in words. Throughout the week in school, we work on a few different ways to sort their words based on those patterns.
- Teacher guided sort: I meet with the groups on the first day of the week to see what patterns they observe in the words. We finish sorting them as a group and they write the lists in their notebooks.
- Speed sort: students put the headings on their desks and the rest of the words in a pile. They sort the words as quickly as they can, checking to make sure they are accurate. They repeat this two more times and increase their speed a little more each time.
- Blind sort: students work in partners to sort the words. One partner holds the words and while the other listens. The partner who is listening spells out the words and indicates which column the words should go in. The partners discuss and then switch roles. In the picture to the left, you'll see Charlie C. and Landon blind sorting!
Spelling scores were sent home in the "Take Home Folder" this past Friday. If you would like to access your child's scores, please have them log onto Spelling City. Then, click "My Records" on the top bar.

It was very nice to meet you all on Back to School Night! I wanted to let you know all about our exciting Friday!! As the students entered the classroom, we could tell that we were going to have a butterfly by the end of the day. The cocoon/chrysalis/pupa was very dark and we could see the wings of our butterfly through it! At the end of the morning meeting, we were so lucky to actually see the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. As the day went on, our little friend let its wings dry and after lunch, we were able to have a "Butterfly Release." We invited Mrs. Nociolo's class to join us as we read aloud some reports we had been working on. Afterwards, we had the official release! Our butterfly had a little trouble emerging from the cage, and it was very sweet to hear all of the students giving the butterfly some words of encouragement. "You can do it!" "You're almost there!" We ended our Friday with some creative writing about our butterfly. I hope that we are able to see something equally as exciting with our last chrysalis!

Thank you all for a wonderful first week of school! It was great to learn more about everyone and to meet some parents as well. Take a look at our class pets: our caterpillars! We currently have one chrysalis and three caterpillars. Maybe we will have a second chrysalis when we return to school on Monday. We will have to wait and see! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
